Overview of Department & Mentor
Acute stroke treatment has evolved greatly over the past few years. Imaging, omic’s and genetics can reveal patients’ clinical trajectory and identify novel therapeutic pathways to develop new stroke and cerebrovascular disease treatments. The goal of this project is to assist in the development of blood biomarkers, MRI, and clinical outcomes database for bioinformatics for stroke cerebrovascular disease research. Students will work on projects as part of the SkRIPT program, which incorporates team science and career development program for trainees with an interest in stroke.
 

Role Summary & Objectives
This internship will provide and introduction to clinical research. The intern will be taught the importance of human subject’s protection, HIPAA, research compliance, IRB review. The intern will learn the importance of chart review, keeping accurate and detailed records and logs, data entry, basics of manuscript writing, and data analysis. The intern will also learn basic information about stroke pathophysiology, brain imaging, and neuroanatomy.  The intern will work on manuscript writing and statistical analysis.

Role Activities & Timeline
Role Activities and curriculum (skills to be learned) over the course of 1 year: 
Literature review 1 month
Chart view and redcap entry 7 months
Manuscript writing last 3 months
Presentation development 1 month
Career Development mentorship throughout:
CV building
Pre-residency neurology prep lectures
Presentation skills
Basics of project development and critical thinking for research project development
 

Required Education & Experience 
•    Must be 18 years of age or older.
•    Must have a HS Diploma or GED.
•    Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern or visitor appointment.
•    INTERNS: Those participating for academic credit must receive academic credit for the duration of the internship. 
•    VISITORS: Must be receiving funding from an eligible sponsoring institution (employer, educator, funder, etc.).
 

Preferred Education & Experience
•    Graduate student currently enrolled in a graduate school (Master’s program, PhD, or Medical School)
•    Basic knowledge of research methods and statistics desirable 
•    Experience with RedCap, Python, Anaconda, STATA, R Studio, SPSS, or SAS software considered an asset.
