Overview of Department & Mentor
Please provide an overview or description of the department, research/administrative/clinical area, and Sponsor/Mentor.
•    The host lab is part of the Jim and Eleanor Randall Department of Surgery, Division of Transplant. It conducts basic research in kidney and liver transplantation and machine perfusion.
•    The visiting researcher will be involved with research organ acceptance, backbenching organ preparation for placing organ on the machine perfusion pump, pharmacologic administration and sample/data collection.  

The visiting research scholar will be mentored by Dr. Irene Kim, Dr. Steggerda, and Dr. Wisel.
Role Summary & Objectives
Provide a description of overall role including goals and objectives. This should highlight how this role will be an educational opportunity or foster collaboration. Include specifics of the project, skills, and techniques the candidate will learn or be trained on.  
•    Participation in an ongoing project on kidney transplantation, immunosuppressants, and machine perfusion (project began 10/2024)
•    Training on Kidney Assist and Liver Assist XVIVO machine perfusion device (for research)
•    Presentation of the scholar’s research work at the end of the program in a formal presentation or seminar. This provides an opportunity for the scholar to develop skills in scientific communication.
Role Activities & Timeline
Provide a detailed description of the activities that will be completed during this appointment. For interns, this should include specific information regarding mentorship and curriculum, including an intended timeline for the activities. 
Month 1-3:  Corporate compliance training, research, CITI training.  Orientation to laboratory and research project with supervised organ acceptance, pump set-up, and data/sample collection

Month 4-6: Data collection (goal of 10 livers and 10 kidneys) in 6 months

Month 7-9:  Data collection (goal of 10 livers and 10 kidneys) in 6 months

Month 10-12: Compilation of data, data analysis, abstract submission and paper writing.

Required Education & Experience 
•    Must be 18 years of age or older.
•    Must have a HS Diploma or GED.
•    Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern or visitor appointment.
•    INTERNS: Those participating for academic credit must receive academic credit for the duration of the internship. 
•    VISITORS: Must be receiving funding from an eligible sponsoring institution (employer, educator, funder, etc.).
Preferred Education & Experience
Dr. Lee is a fully trained and educated surgeon scientist within the Department of Transplantation at the Associate Professor level at Ajou University in Suwon, South Korea. He will be receiving full salary support from Ajou University for his sabbatical period in the laboratory.
