Research Intern
Program Overview
The Toro Health Pathways/Cedars-Sinai Postbac Fellowship provides recent CSUDH graduates a 9-month immersive research experience. Interns work closely with leading cancer researchers to gain real-world experience in cancer prevention, survivorship, and health equity.
Interns will be hosted by the Cancer Research Center for Health Equity (CRCHE), which conducts multidisciplinary cancer research and community outreach with a focus on underserved populations.
Dr. Ramin’s work focuses on breast cancer survivorship, cancer recurrence, and the effects of cardioprotective treatments using real-world healthcare data.
Internship Objectives
Shadow Dr. Ramin and her team on projects examining secondary outcomes in cancer patients treated with incretin mimetics.
Learn retrospective study design, epidemiological methods, and real-world data analysis.
Collaborate across departments, including Radiation Oncology, on cardio-oncology research.
Participate in literature reviews and contribute to study design, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
Attend weekly team meetings, academic seminars, and professional development events.
Training & Skills Gained
Retrospective study design and healthcare data analysis.
Literature review on incretin mimetics (GLP-1 and GIP-1 agonists) and cancer outcomes.
Use of real-world databases and statistical tools to analyze recurrence, new primary cancers, and mortality.
Scientific writing and presentation skills.
Project Timeline
Months 1–2 (Aug–Sep): Orientation, foundational training, literature review
Months 3–5 (Oct–Dec): Data collection, supervised analysis
Months 6–7 (Jan–Feb): Independent research and analysis
Months 8–9 (Mar–May): Final report, manuscript preparation, and research presentation
Weekly meetings, ongoing mentorship, and access to academic forums will occur throughout.
Required Education & Experience
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must have a HS Diploma or GED.
• Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern or visitor appointment.
• INTERNS: Those participating for academic credit must receive academic credit for the duration of the internship.
• VISITORS: Must be receiving funding from an eligible sponsoring institution (employer, educator, funder, etc.).
Preferred Education & Experience
CSU student or recent grad from CSU San Bernardino, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Fullerton, Northridge or Cal Poly Pomona.
